Home schooling parents please comment.?

Sheldon Lally: I see why you are concerned, and it does sound alarming. The truth is, though, that girl could be studying while caring for the family. The bottom line is, will she be prepared for life? For my kids, that means college, so I keep it pretty structured, but there are many ways to do it right. f her child is not being educated, it will catch up with her and she will have to resolve it. There are laws in place that require proof of progress, in most states.

Arnulfo Seegars: I agree Melissa C., frankly these responses are what gives home schooling a bad name.

Kalyn Proietto: I think this is the wrong motivation to homeschool a child but we also have to do what is necessary for the survival of our family. In the long run, the student has to learn or her future is shot, period. In today's world, higher education is the new High School and if you do not qualify for community college, technical college, or university you will be stuck in fairly low ! paying, menial jobs. Ultimately all you can do is hope the parent is doing the right thing by the child. If you are so concerned, ask her if you can help somehow (what are you good at that you could teach to the student?)At the end, at least the student will know how to be a nanny and care for other people's children....Show more

Virgil Loatman: Well she isn't really home schooling then. The parent is suppose to teach the child. I think this is wrong and this woman should be reported. She is giving home school a bad name.Edit: I think this child is being treated very badly.I am a home school parent and having a free baby sitter is NOT a reason to home school.

Coleman Senn: I understand doing what you have to but that doesn't really apply, the household brings in a little over $90,000 a year.

Antonia Quinnett: Learning how to care for a family is an important part of "preparing for life." In most states, homeschoolers are required to pass standardized tests e! ach year to verify they are receiving an education, so it's ve! ry likely this girl IS getting an adequate education, at least in the eyes of "the authorities." It's nice to see families where each person, including children, contributes to the overall care and health of the family instead of the kids just being on the receiving end of all the parents' hard work....Show more

Adan Stribble: There is nothing wrong with it.And for the person above that said she isn't homeschooling how do you know they don't do the work in the evening.Teenagers use to have to help with all the household stuff years ago. I't jsut now they are spoiled and very self indulgant.Well if it is the only reason she does it then she must really need it and who are we to deciede? I mean everyone keeps ranting about how they want things legeal because it suits their needs so who are we to say if it's right or wrong? In short it is none of your business or anyone elses....Show more

Bernadette Roel: There's also an 8th grade boy in the family that has a lot of! activities and I know the woman drives him. Firebird, yes, I don't know much except that she was having trouble keeping up in public school before so I would say no to the academic high flyer. Also the woman works 11pm-11am so the girl gets up with the kids at night and watches them while the woman sleeps. Nobody thinks this not a good thing for the child? It's been going on since she was 11 years old.

Bettye Arre: Is her homeschooler learning? Is she doing well?Is she reaching her goals? Are they in compliance with the law?Is it working for all members of the family? Is the homeschooled student happy with this set up?If yes to all or most, then I don't see what the problem is. ...Show more

Donovan Stallons: What I wanted commented on was that THIS is why she home schools, not because it is in the best interests of the child. Also it has been going on for 3 years since the 3 year old was born.

Renita Sefton: How sad. The child has become a live in nanny i! nstead of a daughter :(

Miguel Koczela: You might want to take wh! at she said with a pinch of salt, but even if it is literally true it doesn't mean that the 10th grader isn't getting as good an education as s/he would be in school. For example are we talking about an academic high flyer here? Maybe learning how to look after young children is actually a useful skill. Maybe s/he does academic work in the evenings and at weekends and is perfectly happy being at home rather than at school You don't provide anywhere near enough information to make even an uniformed judgement and I suspect that you don't have that information....Show more
