I'm trying to decide if I want to teach English or elementary...?

Florencio Dingle: Middle school kids are at their worst. Hitting puberty and trying to fit in. My middle school teachers were always mad at some student. Elementary, kids get really attached to their teacher and their more well behaved.

Cassidy Pangrazio: well...teaching teens are definitely more interesting as they are more mature than kiddies...i mean they can understand you without you having to put much effort in teaching them...if you prefer 8 years old kid who would cling to you 24/7...it's up to you...

Mildred Pombo: go with the younger kiddos! middle school kids think that they are all grown up because they hit puberty and have no respect for their elders!

Thomas Riner: You have to be able to handle teenagers and a lot of them are not very mature. The question is how good at you at enforcing a class full of some mature and some not so good kids?If not its easier to control and teach younger kids.

Sammy Hatzenbihler: anyone know salary ! differences?

Jorge Detlefs: If I had it to do over again, I would probably choose elementary. I love literature, so I chose to become an English teacher. English is a required course throughout school. That means it is full of students who do not really want to take it and would do anything to get out of it, so you are fighting an uphill battle with a lot of students. When I taught public school in the US, many of my students were taking English 1 and English 2 at the same time, and many of my English 1 students were taking it for the 3rd or 4th time. The best student I had in an English 1 (grade 9) class could read and write on about a 6th or 7th grade level, but she was WAY ahead of my other students. The students did not know of, and did not care about anything outside of their immediate experience. (Not their fault. Their experiences had been very limited so they had not developed curiosity.) Because of this, they could not make connections. Teaching literature at! the level that I loved it was not going to happen with those ! kids. But the worst part of being an English teacher is the marking. English teachers spend more time on marking than other teachers. This is partly because it is so subjective, and marking things with subjectivity is very difficult and very painful. I love my older students, and I always thought the younger ones would be too clingy and needy, but now that I'm a mother myself, I think I could handle that. Of course, there are pros and cons to both ends and I don't mean to suggest that teaching elementary is easier than teaching English, only perhaps a little more rewarding. There is no difference in salary where I come from. Your salary is based on your level of education and your years of experience....Show more

Toney Flaten: elementary school are full of a bunch of lil 8 year olds lol id go with English... more mature teens

Tereasa Sorensen: well i say teach first english and then you decide because then you know how to teach odler kids and stuff

Dan Seen! : elementary school kids are whiny and difficult. i should know, i went on work experience at one. longest week of my life. i'm sure that they can be very rewarding, but it really does depend on the type of kids you get in a class. middle school kids are hormonal and challenging, but i think i would enjoy it more, because with english, so long as you get them to think they will stay focused and on track. this is where the difficulties lie. i have had a lot of boring english teachers (all women, i'm sad to say) who think that handing out some photocopies and your assignment is good enough. it isn't!...Show more

Libby Berkovitch: It depends. Like the others said, in Middle School you deal with hormonal teenagers at their worst (it gets better once they hit 16ish), but in Elementary there is a lot more hand holding that must be done. I teach grade 5/6 in an Elementary school, and there is a big difference in maturity and attitude between the 5's and the 6's, partly bec! ause the 6's have officially hit puberty for the most part. Something e! lse to consider is that the older your students, the less prep work you have to do, but the more marking you have to do. Would you rather do more marking or more prep?Anyways, those things are what I would consider. Remember too, a teaching certificate is a teaching certificate (at least where I live). You can probably change levels once you have been teaching for a while. I know a few teachers that moved from High School to Elementary, and one teacher who went the other way.Where I live (BC, Canada), the salary is the same for Elementary and High School. It's based on years of experience, not what you teach.Okay, I hope that helped!...Show more

Kristina Brockwell: the children can grasp things in mother toungue best. teaching in foreing language at primary level will be ore burdonsome and conter productive. it is better to teach englosh as a language from the beginning but the media of instruction shoud be native language. in view of need for standardization, te! chnical terms in english shoud be adopted in loca langusages. it will be ok to switch to english medium from secondarly level.
