im having a problem connecting my computer to a network?

Sharolyn Claybourn: also do I have to install the printer program on the other computer also or can I just click on add printer from network?

An Cardine: Yes both computers can connect to the internet. One computer is XP and the other is Vista.

Garry Ohmen: How do I check to see if the vista computer is in the same workgroup as the other one?How do I know if my router is setup for the tcp thing.

Ramona Pago: You need to set both machines into the same workgroup, and open the exception in the firewall for file and printer sharing. On the Vista machine you need to go to your network connection, right click it and select properties, then advanced. In the Wins tab set always use netbios over tcp/ip and turn off use lmhosts.

Ardell Luy: You need to set up file and printer sharing on both computers from Control Panel. Then, from the printer connected PC, right click on the printer and select Share. Go to the other computer, Add Printer Wizard, and search ! for a printer on the LAN.

Ronnie Sardi: There could be multiple factors:The computer that has the printer physically connected to it, did you configure the XP that the printer is a shareable printer and set the rights to "everyone" to access it.Are both computer using the same workgroup name so it can see each other? You can tell by double clicking on "my network places" and then click on "View workgroup computers".Has the router been configured to do dhcp function? If not, then you may have tcp/ip situation in reference to segment. The above statements are to help you isolate the issues. If you are still having problem, please post again with more description....Show more

Myron Leftwich: Have you joined a workgroup? Are both computers on the same workgroup? Are both computers either Windows 2000, XP, or Vista? If you have 9x you will need to use the Windows cd from the newer os's to setup the networkCould your firewall be blocking the network? Try disabling any! and all firewalls you may have while testingSince you have yo! ur modem pluged in are you able to browse the internet on both PC's?heres how to change Vistas workgroup..1. Open the Control Panel, If it is not already in classic view, the switch to classic view. 2. Click on the System icon.3. Click on either Advanced System Settings in the left column, or Change settings. You shouldnt have to install the printers software on the other computer, and if your router is allowing you to browse the internet then there is nothing else you need to setup on the routers end. I have never seen a router that needed DHCP setup, it wouldnt be much of a router if it did. You can check your routers settings though by opening internet explorer and typing in the ip address of the router. This ip address varies by manufactuer. My routers ip address is 192.168.2.1 , another popular choice is 192.168.0.1 If both of these Ip addresses do not work then you can click strart, then run, type in command. Once the command prompt comes up type in "ipconfig", a! nd in the information presented the default gateway will be the ip of your router. Once again make sure you disable firewall while testing. Are you able to see the other computer in network neighborhood?...Show more
